Today I was reflecting on the game Fallout 3. It is a bleak future world where we have suffered a nuclear Armageddon, and mankind is trying to emerge from its stylized 1950s bomb shelters to try to start over.
As part of the story, there are some interesting parallels to our current socio-political troubles. China invades Alaska, America annexes Canada, we discover secret government programs which used citizens as test subjects, etc.
As I played the game, I realized that this negative Utopian game world has some scary predictions. I don't expect us to annex Canada, but China today is sending its navy into the blue waters off the coast of Somalia to fight pirates. They are beginning to exercise financial muscle on the west. Rogue nations like North Korea can test ballistic missile technology with impunity. Iran wants to build nuclear weapons. Pakistan has nuclear weapons, and the political situation is rapidly deteriorating.
It becomes more important that we look at this world, and seek ways to make the lives of common people more extraordinary. An extraordinary life lived promotes freedom and democracy. This is truly a path to an enlightened life.
